o DStv and e tv are launching their mobile tv broadcasts this month in South Africa. DStv mobile will be free until March. From April 1, it’ll be R36 a month. Only there’s one little problem – getting your hands on a phone which will let you watch their broadcasts. Apparently there are presently only three phones with the required DVB-H receivers available in South Africa. Two of these are Nokia devices, the Nokia 5330 and the Nokia N96. The other phone is the ZTE F900 (apparently it’s an Acer phone). The only problem is that it probably won’t be too easy to get your hands on these in South Africa. The N96 is a few years old now and has long gone off the market. The 5330 is a more recent device, but I have never even seen it marketed in South Africa. It is claimed that more phones will be available soon. However, most of the smart phones currently getting released still lack a DVB-H receiver (probably for several reasons including cost and space considerations). So you’d basically end up having to buy a particular phone just to get one with a DVB-H receiver. You can get a stand-alone receiver (called the Drifta for R599) to get reception on your computer, but that rather defeats the purpose of mobile TV.

Canada’s Rogers Wireless will be launching the Nokia 6790 Surge Smartphone in the near future. The Nokia 6790 was launched recently in the US via AT&T. Rogers will offer the Nokia 6790 to their subscribers for $89.99 provided they sign a 3 year contract. Customers will also have the option to pay the full retail price of $279.99 if they wish to avoid signing a service contract. In comparison AT&T offers the Surge for $79.99 with a two year contract.
The Nokia smartphone features a 2.4 inch QVGA display, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 2 megapixel camera, 2.5 mm headset jack, Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities, micro SD memory card slot and GPS support.

Folks in Canada will soon be able to purchase two new smartphones, the Nokia X6 16GB and the Nokia E72. The Nokia X6 16GB appears on Nokia Canada’s website as “coming soon”. It seems that the phone will be available in full black, pink and yellow. FYI, this Symbian-powered phone comes jam packed with a 3.2-inch (360 x 640 pixels) touchscreen display, HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, a GPS, Ovi Maps with free navigation, a 3.5mm headset jack, a 5MP autofocus camera, and a 16GB of internal memory. LG is adding three new devices to its army of touchscreen featurephones, all part of the just-announced Wink Series: LG Wink T300, LG Wink Style T310 and LG Wink 3G T320.
Reportedly designed to meet the demands of young users (the so-called Generation Z), the LG Wink phones come with wide social networking support, customizable interface, “intuitive and easy-to-use virtual QWERTY keypad”, “enhanced music functionality” (including FM radio and 3.5mm headset jacks), 2MP cameras, and MicroSD card support.
The LG Wink T300 (pictured below) is the smallest of the series, featuring a 2.4 inch QVGA touchscreen display – which LG dares to call “generous”.

All LG Wink phones will be available starting August in Europe and the Middle East. Other markets – Latin America, Asia (including China) and the CIS – will get the phones later in Q3. LG said nothing about the phones’ prices, but they should be on the low side – for example, the Wink T300 should cost about as much as the Samsung Champ (slightly over €100).

Here’s another leak and this time it comes from the Sony Ericsson stables. The upcoming Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone has been spotted out there and rumors have started flying thick and fast on a possible release during February next’s Mobile World Congress. So that means, you may not get to play with it before this year’s holiday season comes to a close.
What occurs to us is though an out and out PlayStation phone, the upcoming Sony Ericsson device may not play full PSP download titles.
It is being rumored that the phone which could come with a $500 price tag would incorporate a five game bundle, and not give away custom-made games at sub-$10 prices. That seems like sense to us.

It is not yet known as to what kind of branding the phone will come with. It is expected that the Xperia brand name will be adhered to, and on the display department it could boast of a Bravia branding.
We guess the Bravia branding could be something of a rival to the iPhone 4’s Retina Display that has been discussed in detail.
Guess we will wait for February so that the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone gets shown off at the MWC 2011. May be, much earlier to that we could even be fortunate enough to an official statement from the company.

                        Samsung Mobiles 2012Samsung have announced a new Windows Mobile smartphone and promised a lease of new life for several other existing models, each of which will get an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5.  The new Samsung Omnia Pro B7330 is a straightforward QWERTY-toting candybar running Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard, and pretty much takes the core of the B7320 and slaps a 320 x 320 display and HSUPA support into the handset.
Meanwhile the five existing Samsung Omnia models currently on sale – which means the i8000, B7320, B7300, B7330 and B7610 – are all getting an update to the newest version of Microsoft’s smartphone OS, v6.5.  That’s new handsets sold, incidentally; existing owners of the Omnia II, B7610 and B7320 will be eligible for an update from 6.1 to WinMo 6.5.

What we don’t know, as yet, is when exactly that update will be released.  Samsung have merely said “upon the update’s availability”, which will obviously depend in no small part on when Microsoft push Windows Mobile 6.5 out the door.

It is the Nokia Morph concept phone which looks similar to their other concept phone, the Nokia 888. These phones give us a rare glimpse into how tomorrow’s mobile phone will look and interact with us mere mortals.
Somewhat different to the sleek iPhone, which I feel is the last bastion to the ‘conventional’ mobile phone ‘brick’ design, the Nokia Morph finally bridges the gap between the application of highly advanced technologies and human interaction.
The Nokia Morph uses the latest nanotechnology and electro-luminescent materials, it allows the user to twist and shape the phone into almost any shape. Minority Report perhaps, but this concept phone does give us a privileged glimpse into what is in store for us – the consumer, and how we will interact with tomorrow’s technology.
